A family’s place in the wilderness, outside of time; free-range animals and children, junk and nature, all within the most sublime landscape. The work aims at an idea of freedom, which is reflected in the hand-processed Scope format, but is undercut with a sense of foreboding. There’s no particular story; beginning, middle or end, just fragments of lives lived, rituals performed.

Amandla! is an impassioned chronicle of the role of music as a mean of protest and survival through more than 40 years of struggle against racial oppression. “The apartheid government took everything away from people, but it couldn't stop them from singing”, says director Lee Hirsch. In the songs there could even be found a rare ability of South Africa's people to find humour and creativity in impossible conditions, in abject poverty - and in battle.

An Injury to One provides a glimpse of a particularly volatile moment in early 20th century American labor history: the rise and fall of Butte, Montana. Specifically, it chronicles the mysterious death of Wobbly organizer Frank Little. Butte's history was entirely shaped by its exploitation by the Anaconda Mining Company, which, at the height of WWI, produced ten percent of the world's copper from the town's depths. War profiteering and the company's extreme indifference to the safety of its employees (mortality rates in the mines were higher than in the trenches of Europe) led to Little's arrival. “The agitator” found in the desperate, agonized miners overwhelming support for his ideas, which included the abolishment of the wage system and the establishment of a socialist commonwealth.

Angel is confronted with the consequences of the domestic violence that he perpetrated against his wife, Graciela, and their children over a period of many years. His desire to get his family back gives him the strength to begin a process of soul-searching and to face up to the profound changes of attitude and habits that are essential before real change can take place. Ready to overcome his own existential void, he embarks on the painful process of searching for the roots of the violence he suffered as a child as a result of his disrespect for his Mazahua culture and his mother language.

Set in an imagined present in which a bridge spans the Strait of Gibraltar, Atlantropa mixes fact and fiction by connecting the bridge to contemporary news reports and to a modernist architect's vision: to dam the Strait and create a new continent. Originally intended as a symbol of unity between Africa and Europe, the bridge is eventually seized by EU forces and takes on a completely different meaning. The Gilbraltar Bridge, first mentioned in science fiction by Arthur C. Clarke, has more recently been investigated as an actual possibility by the United Nations.

September 11, 2001 ushered in a new world order that extended to the age-old practice of torture. In this new paradigm, torture is seen as necessary – and therefore justifiable – in the war against terrorism. Furthermore, victims have no rights, they do not exist for legal purposes and can simply disappear in long secret flights to unknown destinations. This documentary traces the story of some survivors of this globalised torture who spent time in places like Abu Ghraib, Bagram, and Guantanamo. And for those who still think that the Abu Ghraib photos were a one-off situation, an isolated case, it takes us on a journey back in time, to Argentina and Guatemala, and even to the Middle Ages and the Holy Inquisition.
