The search for water, the descent deep into the well of the heart. Based on a 17th Century Persian poem by Najmudin Kubra. The most probable is that sooner or later we will meet in an apparently dry and arid wilderness. Unexpectedly our footsteps have left us there, all roads are possible, but none of them seem to lead anywhere. In our loneliness we find that contemplation is our only company, the quiet gaze shows us a quiet world, a world that slowly begins to show itself outside of the parameters of desire or functionality to be a world with no outside or inside. Now we understand better, that that which we see is no stranger to us and this journey takes on a diverse and interpretative sense. A small group of men appears in the distance, we go closer and follow them. One of them is a water diviner, he looks for water with an olive branch, his steps are quick, suddenly, as if receiving a blow he falters, and perhaps will fall, we fall... On a dry bush in the wilderness a few small flowers have bloomed, our steps now pass over a path of dust, stones, brambles and acacia, crossing gates, and whispers, murmurs, or laughter of children... Lying on the dirt, like the dirt, so that a well can open in our chest and consciousness can descend close to the heart, there we will see without words, with the sounds of heartbeat breathing, a reminder of the place we come from, of where we belong, from where appearance springs, like those clouds that form whimsical figures that linger only a moment... A search for what there is of life in us. The presence of that which makes us live. Video Serie: El Hamdulillah Tapes.

This short film, taken from the feature La Folle de Toujane, brings to the foreground a political event almost separate from its main storyline. René Vautier plays a “committed” director-producer who has just witnessed the brutal beating of an “Arab” by the police in the street, right in front of the café where he's having lunch. The scene deeply shocks him; he doesn't react in the moment, but promises himself he will one day make a film about what he saw. This scene, which refers to the massacre of Algerians in Paris (October 17, 1961), powerfully symbolizes the importation of the criminal mindset that fueled the French army’s intervention in Algeria. It reminds us of the reality of extreme violence, still present in collective memory and yet never acknowledged by a France that continues to deny its responsibility. A denunciation of the self-censorship of French filmmakers in the 1960s and ’70s when facing the reality of state racism.

In the depths of aquatic worlds there is an amniotic fluid that connects us, immersing us in that place where gills are evident through bubbles, plankton and algae. Fluid, lactating worlds where the horizon is hazy and undulating. Where up or down is anywhere and everywhere at the same time.

At the award ceremony for the Collar of the Hermine in Pontivy in September 2000, René Vautier was confronted by Claudine Dupont-Tingaud, a former regional councilor for the National Front and ex-OAS activist. With sharp wit and humor, Vautier tore apart her arguments, and in the end, she walked out of the room under a chorus of boos from the audience.

              The public presentation

The Purple Meridians is a joint project by three organisations in Spain, Italy and Turkey that brings together eighteen women filmmakers, six from each country, to debate the difficulties faced by women working in the filmmaking industry and wider screen sector. The aim is to share strategies for overcoming common obstacles and set up a support and exchange network for future partnerships crisscrossing Europe from east to west.

The project is made up of three workshops, an online roundtable, onsite screenings in Barcelona, Turin and Diyarbakır and an online programme featuring a selection of films by the participating filmmakers. The films, subtitled in English, will be made available on the streen.org platform, free of charge on the first day (to be decided on the basis of the onsite screenings) and then on a pay-per-view basis for three months.

Once the onsite and online workshops have been held in Barcelona, Turin and Diyarbakır,  each group will watch the videos of the workshops held by the other two groups and draw up a set of conclusions to share at the online international roundtable.

The filmmakers resident in Catalonia ( Anna Giralt Gris, Raquel Marques, Pilar Monsell , Ro Caminal, Lara Vilanova i Lili Marsans) will meet at the Centre Cívic Pati Llimona , where they will connect with Turin (as part of the Torino Film Festival) and Diyarbakır (Turkey).

OVNI, Mostra de Films de Dones i l’Alternativa will present a programme of films made up of two films by each of the eighteen participating filmmakers.

The remaining shorts will be screened on the same day on a continuous loop on a monitor at the Pati Llimona Civic Centre.

All the films will be available from 3 December in their original language with English subtitles on purplemeridians.org .

Three organisations in cities and countries that are far away from each other, but share the desire for a fairer distribution of opportunities for women and non-binary people in the audiovisual and film industry.

Over the past year, three workshops were held in which 18 film and video makers discussed and shared their experiences and knowledge.

The workshops gave rise to several proposals, including the desire to continue to cultivate these connections, and to organise a face-to-face meeting in which to further develop individual needs and strengthen personal and professional links.

In 2022, we organized a thematic residence at Faberllull Olot to keep working on the proposals that emerged in the 2021 workshops: an international meeting of 10 filmmakers from different countries, to break the boundaries they have faced and contribute proposals for moving forward.

The idea is to create a network for mutual support and exchange for future collaborations, along an axis that crosses the whole of Europe, from its eastern to its western border.
