              Iirgu is an elder from the Siberian Yupik Eskimo village of Gambell on St. Lawrence Island. As two grandchildren listen, Iirgu recounts events in Gambell from the time the first missionaries arrived. His story is known as an ungipamsuk or true historical narrative. With ambivalent feelings, he describes more recent changes - how whaling practices have changed, how life has become easier, but also how younger generations are losing touch with the old ways.

A dramatized scene in an European steamship office is used to show the economic, political and religious motives for immigration.               Imaginary Laughter was made specially for an exhibition entitled "Imaginary Beings" at Exit Art, New York. Both my film and the exhibition are in some sense loosely inspired by Borges's "Book of Imaginary Beings". However I did not want my bestiary to assume the form of an elegant labyrinthine catalogue but to reflect even more of the subjective element in the perception of monstrosities, of the Other. It became a kind of essay in the construction of hysteria by men. Not only in the way they project it onto women and other men, but in the form it arises within themselves.

              "'I am nice. I... am nice. I am... nice," repeats the narrator, in this personal and highly poetic exploration of the construction of self. Mirra favors repetition as the device for reconstructing the stage of development when a child learns its name. Like a bedtime story, the narrator unfolds the tale of a child who identifies herself as a bear. The story becomes increasingly complex as it moves from one voice to two, in which bear and child gradually become distinct entities and the haiku poetry of the child’s identification, 'I, Bear,' is ultimately forsaken for the name Helen. I, Bear is filled with longing for a moment when, as undifferentiated child subjects, we could have identified ourselves as anything, including the most misunderstood of animals." Hamza Walker, VDB

              I Saw a Jesus in a Tortilla

              Taken almost verbatim from a newspaper, The Arizona Daily Star, the video recounts the story of Ramona Barrrara, a New Mexico woman who saw the face of Jesus in a tortilla when she was rolling her husband's burrito. In an attempt to manipulate the media to her advantage in publicizing this miraculous event, the media ultimately exploited the most important event of this woman's life for its sensational value. 3 Mostra de Vídeo Independent de Barcelona 1996.
