A short film based on an interview in a bakery in Berlin. When I first struck up a conversation with the people working there, they told me that they were from Iraq. As we continued talking to each other, they became more and more insistent on the fact that they were all Kurdish, and that they were making bread after a Kurdish tradition. A sign above the shop window that says “Oriental flat bread” in German, and I was curious to find out why the bakery “orientalized” itself. The answer to this question is not simple at all, and cannot be found in this film. What emerges instead is a fragment of a story suppressed between national narratives of war, displacement and migration.

Between 600 kebabs a day, nagging students and an oversalted soup: three cooks and a kitchen hand work in the small university canteen in Tehran, carrying out their duties at the market and in the kitchen with wit and irony, philosophizing about cooking and life in general....In this rather unpretentious micrososmos we gain a real insight into the private moments and interesting views in this small parallel universe.

The film focuses on the re-enactment of a demonstration of women against the prohibition of work introduced by the Taliban. The shots were taken during the shooting of the Afghan feature film OSAMA in November 2002 in the streets of Kabul. 1000 women had come to play in this scene, and their personal experiences were identical with the ones of the protagonists. Most of the women acted in the demonstration scene to earn money. By demanding work they hoped to improve their real situation.
