Scope and content

I have been appropriating films as a readymade, a found object mined for personal, psychological, and sociocultural associations. In this project, I investigate my role as “myself” by playing several different personages. Living in this hyperreal world, it is almost impossible for us to hold 100% of our own copyright as original beings. I, as a very active consumer on pop culture, create this video work under the problematic status of my originality. In the copy culture, we create ourselves by using our own copy method. Our copies are degraded version of some idealized images, and which are enlarged, reduced, or converted to be customized. In any case, our originalities have hardly ever come from the pure creativity, but from the skill of copying and editing in this age of advanced mechanical reproduction. Under such circumstance, my life actually is like karaoke. I wonder if I have been subscribing the life scenario and just playing my given role... In this karaoke society, “I” seem to exist as a marionette, and am dancing and singing like the character in the Disneyland. I am scared to become a ghost/zombie at the end of this consuming activity, yet I am dancing anyway for now like Karen* did... (Karen: a girl from The Red Shoes by Andersen.)
