Doing Time, Doing Vipassana
ES ES-OVNI CTX-S012-SS006-0008 · Item · 1997
Part of Non-Identified Video Observatory (OVNI)

This is the story of an ancient meditation technique called Vipassana, which shows people how to take control of their lives and channel them toward their own good. It is the story of a strong woman called Kiran Bedi, the former Inspector General of Prisons in New Delhi, who strove to transform the notorious Tihar Prison and turn it into an oasis of peace. But most of all it is the story of prison inmates who underwent profound change, and who realized that incarceration is not the end but possibly a fresh start toward an improved and more positive life.

This video begins with Rapunzel's fairy tale wedding. Selected clips from the children's animation depict her marriage falling apart. Newsreel footage of fashion models and sequences from a film about communication technology are linked to the witch. The implication is that the mass media casts a spell that disenchants viewers.

On the 5th of September, 2007, the fishing boat Nuevo Pepita Aura was shipwrecked 14 miles out at sea, south east of Barbate in Cádiz, southern Spain. Of the sixteen crew members, eight survived, three have died and five are still missing. Taking the shipwreck as its starting point, the documentary WHERE THERE'S A CAPTAIN... brings to the surface the working and socialeconomic conditions of coastal fishermen from the villabe of Barbate. A local story that is, in turn, global. A ensemble tale featuring a group of sailors who collectively reflect and, using their own ideosynchratic, creative language, construct a discouse that focuses on precarity and labour risks, displacement and the globalisation of the free market ideology. Without future prospects, as part of their day to day life, they express their demands for other living and working conditions that go beyond the old, prevailing master-slave dialectic.

Donia Amar is one of Al Azma’s earlier works, it essentially observes the relationship between two pop singers, Mostafa Amar and Donia - each from a different social class - and their fans. Al Azma follows the two pop stars and their fans around recording fragments of concerts, interviews, and rehearsals at their studios. The film differs from mainstream documentary by using a wide range of images and techniques to reveal and interpret the wider context of the social and political reality of popular culture in Cairo.
