“Cousas do Kulechov” is an experimental short film inspired by L.V. Kulechov, in which we try to put the elasticity of MONTAGE to the test in order to reflect on the fragility and veracity of what we see and hear. Travelling through the landscape, customs and current situation in Galicia, we present a fictitious armed conflict in which an invading army attacks the Galician coastline. Thus we have created a “mock documentary” in which the wartime fleet is played by the mussel beds cultivated on rafts in the inlets, the attack on the beaches is represented by the shellfish collectors as they work along the shore, the bombs are the firecrackers and rockets launched during festivals, etc.. Film editing serves as a metaphor for the most unjustified and cruel type of montage: WAR. We wanted to take our audience to the edge, to the limits, with sequences that were impossible but at the same time credible. We have tried to show a “war of wars” which includes images that evoke the Spanish Civil War, sequences that transport us to the World Wars or to more recent conflicts in Iraq and other more contemporary scenarios. Therefore, we ‘stretched' the montage in order to make a proposal, a risky one, from an extreme: to create a war out of ‘fiesta'. The film can thus have several interpretations. On the one hand images and sound can deceive us more than ever in these complicated and mendacious times of macro-businesses functioning at the expense of collective misery and suffering. At the dawn of this new century we believe, not without a certain amount of irony, that montage is the “weapon of the future”.

Registers the withdrawal of tradition past a surpassing disaster (the fifteen-year Lebanese war); produces completed crossword puzzles with subsisting blank spaces in a country of shattered shop signs; exhibits the rise in 1992-Beirut of a sublime architecture of bricks in a period where it appears Arabs are being driven to the Stone Age (Palestinians throwing stones at the Israeli army in the Occupied Territories, etc) and uses fiction to document the eruption of psychotic effects in and outside mental hospitals.
