Programa capturado en Nueva York. Breakthrough es el Ministerio Mediático de Rod Parsley/ Lider entre los creyentes de las clases medias de la América más hostil
One of the best examples of post-World War II social guidance films, with examples of "good" and "bad" girls, courtesy to parents, and an analysis of what makes some people popular and others not. A scream and a sobering document of postwar conformity. (The Prelinger Archives are a source of educational material, mainly ordered by theme, giving a vision of the dark side, the underbelly, perhaps naive of the American dream and the America that is often hidden behind the media curtain.)
Three characters in a medieval castle that walk trough the space, a reflection about images takes place. From the simple act of pressing a button to take a photo, to the meaning of representation, the characters flow into an object between fixation and movement, between matter and representation.
If the new world ever existed, it is still hidden way behind the horizon. An analogue clock is ticking away the last seconds before world crisis, while a noble patina covers fragments for archaeologists of memory. A silent relief in between two wars; a time of diffident bodies, of melancholy leisure, of secret divisions of the world. It is 1929. Peace before an enormous explosion.
This experimental short film takes its name from the Greek myth wherein Ariadne falls in love with Theseus who seeks to kill the Minotaur in Daedalus' labyrinth. Clever Ariadne gives Theseus a ball of red thread so that he may find his way out of the labyrinth after killing the Minotaur. From one architectural maze to another, the red thread leads the viewer on a journey that weaves in and out of a dream like state, in and out of an occasionally intrusive present reality.
Armenian Lullaby is a video poem based on the verse of my great-great-grandfather, Rafael Patkanian (1830-1892) about a mother who is singing a lullaby to her child, calling on different birds who are associated with various professions. The baby falls asleep only to the song of Falcon, who is singing battle songs, in other words, chooses the profession of a soldier. Traditionally it's considered a patriotic song: in the country that survived genocide, Soviet regime and recent war with Azerbaijan, sons' primary vocation is to become soldiers. I dedicate my interpretation to the Mothers of soldiers.
Yussuf carried out a suicide bombing in Hadera in 2001, Ashraf was killed by the Israeli army in the battle in the Jenin refugee camp and Ala lead the Al Aqsa Brigades in Jenin until he was killed in November 2002. Juliano Mer Khamis knew them since they were small children and documented them from 1989-1996 in the theatre group he directed. In April 2002 he returns to Jenin with his camera in order to discover what happened to the children he knew and loved. Juliano Mer Khamis is the son of the Jewish Arna Mer and a Palestinian who got married in the 50's. Juliano is today one of the region's leading actors. Arna Mer established an alternative educational system in teh West Bank to replace the formal one that was practically paralysed by the Israeli occupation. Arna?s Children offers a prime connection between past and present, for Juliano Mer Khamis return to Jenin made him see how everything had changed...
