The night crossing of a Mediterranean city by car. Its passenger stay there almost invisible, absorbed by the urban view. A voice confirms a lonely night wandering in a city by the sea, an urban journey made to let the time pass away. Who crosses this city isn't only passing through it. He's a local, for a night, before an exile without return.

Le Bled (Buildings in a Field) , Jem Cohen, Lucy Sante, EE.UU, Morocco, 13min. VO.

"En route from the airport to the city center, we found ourselves amazed by the landscape outside of the car windows; a massive construction project under way in all directions. While not in itself unusual, we were by struck dumb by the epic scale and seemingly incomprehensible plan of the development and were drawn to return together to this puzzling zone".

Pier Paolo Pasolini, Sabaudia e la "civilta' dei consumi , anonymous on the net, 1974, Italy, 5 mim. VOSE

“Fascism was just a bunch of criminals in power, but it managed to deeply transform Italy. Nowadays the opposite is true, and the power of today’s democratic regime is managing to achieve the acculturation and standardization that fascism was unable to complete. The power of the consumer society that destroys other particular realities and impoverishes the diversity of human beings.”

The City of Saba , DJ Kadagian, Four Seasons Productions, 2007, EE.UU, 9 min, VOSE.

Imitations of Life

"It may indeed be questioned whether we have any memories at all from our childhood: memories relating to our childhood may be all that we possess. Our childhood memories show us our earliest years not as they were, but as they appeared at the later periods when the memories were aroused. In these periods of arousal, the childhood memories did not, as people are accustomed to say, emerge; they were formed at that time. And a number of motives, with no concern for historical accuracy, had a part in forming them, as well as in the selection of the memories themselves." Freud . This ten-part video strains childhood through a history of reproduction, culling pictures from the Lumiéres to the present day in order to find the future in our past. Here are children of pictures, as pictures, the ones who will walk on our graves, granted a legacy of framing and image making that have helped shape their lives, and their ability to grieve those no longer around to share them.a video in ten parts: In the Future (3 min), Jack (15 min), Last Thoughts (7 min), Portrait (4 min), Secret (2 min), In My Car (5 min), The Game (5.5 min), Scaling (5 min), Imitation of Life (21 min), Rain (3.5 min).

Imagine the Sound - Restored

The first feature documentary by Ron Mann (GRASS, COMICBOOK CONFIDENTIAL) is an eloquent tribute to a group of highly celebrated artists that helped forge the avant-garde jazz of the 1960s. Critic and film historian Jonathan Rosenbaum has said IMAGINE THE SOUND “may be the best documentary on free jazz that we have.” The film features articulate interviews and dramatic performances by pianists Cecil Taylor and Paul Bley, tenor saxophone Archie Shepp, and trumpet player Bill Dixon. Not since Scorsese's The Last Waltz has a music documentary been so thorough and compatible with its subject. Alongside the dynamic performances, the fi lm captures the diverse history and politicized roots of this unique musical genre. IMAGINE THE SOUND is an important chapter in the history of the jazz documentary.

Imaginary Laughter

Imaginary Laughter was made specially for an exhibition entitled "Imaginary Beings" at Exit Art, New York. Both my film and the exhibition are in some sense loosely inspired by Borges's "Book of Imaginary Beings". However I did not want my bestiary to assume the form of an elegant labyrinthine catalogue but to reflect even more of the subjective element in the perception of monstrosities, of the Other. It became a kind of essay in the construction of hysteria by men. Not only in the way they project it onto women and other men, but in the form it arises within themselves.

Static images are presented to the human visual system in a way that creates the illusion of movement.

Santa Mònica  series 2024.

"The concept of 'illusory movement', also known as 'apparent movement', refers to the perception of movement in a static image or in a sequence of images. This phenomenon occurs when static images are presented to the human visual system in a way that creates the illusion of movement."

"Illusion of Movement" is the thematic continuation of the last module of the Observatory in "Video Tuesday 2023", titled "Intimacy vs Media". It was originally developed during the early days of the Unidentified Video Observatory in the nineties. It collected various considerations about contradictions, inertia, continuities, and tensions of personal experience in the contemporary media flow.
