Every morning, we sign the Contract. The system at the heart of our “free" world is based on a kind of contract that we all agree to. We sign it every morning: “I accept competition as the foundation of our system, even though I am aware that it generates frustration and anger for the majority of those who lose. I agree to be humiliated and exploited in exchange for being allowed to humiliate and exploit those on a lower rung of the social pyramid (...)"

“Le cercle des noyés” (The circle of the drowned men) is the name given to a group of black political prisoners in Mauritania who were arrested in 1986 and incarcerated in the city of Oulata's former Colonial Fort. The documentary follows the subtle mental process of one of the ex-prisoners as he remembers his own story and that of his fellow prisoners. Like an echo, we see a series of images of the sites of their confinement – bare, stripped of all traces of this past.

"A collaboration with writer Lucy Sante made in Tangier, Morocco, a city where neither of us had ever been. En route from the airport to the city center, we found ourselves amazed by the landscape outside of the car windows; a massive construction project under way in all directions. While not in itself unusual, we were by struck dumb by the epic scale and seemingly incomprehensible plan of the development and were drawn to return together to this puzzling zone".

Shea butter is increasingly appreciated in Europe, where it is used in the cosmetic industry and as a cocoa substitute. In sharing the lives of Shea butter producers in Burkina Faso, the film carries us to the heart of the problems of survival in Africa.

The video depicts a dark and obscure world of perception, trying to capture the intangible, breaking away from the concrete notion of sight and sound, and creating an amplitude of cognitions, where attention is diverted to unexpected places: 'As we move from the more conscious aspects of interpreting messages toward the more unconscious processes of perception we seem to be shifting our levels of abstraction from the more concrete towards the more abstract' (Gregory Bateson).
