Presentation of the !f Istanbul International Independent Film Festival, by Serra Ciliv. For the last five years, the !f Istanbul festival for independent films takes place in Istanbul, Turkey, presenting the works of both renowned and upcoming film-makers.nThe festival combines a wide number of filming styles and genres, promoting independent film production, while bridging European and Asian cinema worlds. The festival, dedicated to the best of independent works, creates new sections each year, following cinematic trends as well as political and social trends in the world. So far each year, the festival dedicated one section to the global political agendas of the times, largely focusing on US international policies, its influences on the Middle East and human rights. In its fifth year this year, the festival programmers created a special section called "Insiders / Outsiders". The section brought together a level headed focus on the inner workings of power and its confrontations with tales from the margins, those who resist the system, stay out of it or are excluded from it. This year, in order to celebrate its fifth anniversary, !f istanbul presented a small yet powerful selection of its films in Ankara. Hopefully, in the coming years, !f will travel to other cities in Turkey as well.

The idea for this short / interview arises from research work on youth and migration. From this interview, we want to focus on migration as a global and timeless phenomenon. Our intention is for the viewer to understand that young people share similar interests, expectations and objectives like access to studies, a job, a stable and safe home ... Even though the phenomenon of migration is complex and we must take many factors into account, with this video we want to continue eliminating prejudices and rejection of migrants from all over the world, understanding that their objectives are not different from those of ours, but that many times in their countries of origin their integrity is compromised and violated and their opportunities to access a better life are limited, and therefore it is necessary to undertake a trip. In this interview, Juliana tells us what prompted her migratory path, the unstable situation in which she lived, the opportunities she has had and her goals: to find a job, continue her studies, take care of her family ..., while she tells us how his grandfather was also a young migrant during World War II, in search of a better future. Showing us how cycles repeat themselves and that it is necessary to create mechanisms and networks so that young people can emigrate in dignified and safe conditions. This video is part of the Educational Agreement of collaboration between theOVNI Archives and the Department of Anthropology of the University of Barcelona - UAB , for the curricular external practices of the students, of the academic year 2020-2021. work pdf

Europlex tracks distinct cross-border activities through the Spanish-Moroccan borderland and seeks to make these obscure paths visible. On their repetitive circuit around the check-point to the Spanish enclave Ceuta, the video follows in three borderlogs the smuggling women who strap multiple layers of clothes to their bodies; the daily commute of "domesticas" who turn into time travellers as they move back and forth between the Moroccan and European time zones; and the Moroccan women working in the transnational zones in Northafrica for the European market. All these trajectories move around and in between the imperative of the territorial borders. They form, however, a vital layer of the cultural and economic space between Europe and Africa.
Europe Trap is a film depicting the true struggle of a refugee. A close-up of Zakereh, a 55-year-old mother trying to reunite with her son, who is trapped in Greece. Through her eyes we shall witness her struggle against herself and society; a struggle as hard as the previous one she faced during wartime in Afghanistan. Zakereh fled Afghanistan many years ago. She escaped from war but she found misery and hostility. First in Iran, as a widow, with one child and without any rights, and later on, by crossing without papers many borders until she arrived in Europe. Once in Europe, at Athens airport she lost her son Omid and arrived alone in Spain without knowing where she was. Now she is suffering from culture shock, trying to fit in in another world where she doesn’t belong and dealing every day with a strange reality, with all her sadness and pain. The intimate portrait of an Afghan woman, who first became a widow and then a refugee. A testimony of the incomprehension of a new world and the situation she has to deal with now – a war as hard as the previous one, in the Europe Trap. A documentary about exile, loneliness, and the ghosts of war.

A video essay by Alessandro Quaranta and Toni Cots, in collaboration with CRA’P – Creation Practices and Artistic Research. States of Passage, shows an ‘alterity’ of subjects and cultures, which by constituting a radical alternative to the dominant and homogeneous thought, both in terms of socio-cultural spheres and small communities, they challenge the spatial-temporal and anthropocentric convictions of control and knowledge of any visible and invisible phenomena. It is precisely in terms of the invisibility or visibility of the apparent, that which has prompted us to elaborate this essay with images, and the word as evocation. This video-essay is a testimony of this attempt: the subjects that appear are marginalised beings or entities, self-exiles, ascetics, primitives, etc., in and from the margins of ‘civilisation’. The material used consists partly of open source videos available on the net and re-edited, some available on the OVNI archive, and others created specifically for this project. Authors cited in the video essay States of Passage: Scott Barley, Philippe Descola, Federico Lanchares, Ciro Guerra, Xavi Hurtado, Gian Antonio Gilli, Toni Cots, Alessandro Quaranta, Pavel Lungin, Ben Rivers, Bruno Latour, Carlos Casas, Toni Serra *) Abu-Ali. This video essay is a non-profit research project for educational purposes.
