June 2013. A group of 800 people illegally occupy a former movie theatre in Barcelona in order to screen a documentary. Once they are in, they rename the building after a girl who committed suicide in 2011. It becomes ‘Cinema Patricia Heras’. Who was Patricia? Why did she kill herself? And above all, what role did Barcelona play in her death? That is precisely what this documentary and the strongly symbolic squatting action seeks to bring to light: through Patricia’s story, they reveal the dark side of Barcelona: The Dead City.

February 2003 Iraq. More than 300 people arrived in Baghdad to try to stop the war. They went there as human shields, placing themselves in strategic spots to prevent them from being bombed, but negotiations with Saddam Hussein’s regime did not turn out as they had hoped they would. A human shield diary shows the great disparities between a people’s movement and a dictatorial regime.

On the border, the line as principle of property and belonging reaches an extreme dimension where it physically defines the sphere of its relations. Those who transgress it reconstruct these imaginary lines on a daily basis, redefining the traditional geography and occupying the non-spaces where others live in a temporary form of existence. These others, the non-citizens, are phantasmtic, exchangeable parts of a flexible market. Made invisible, they are permanently controlled persons. Under the pretext of a greater civilian security, they are kept clear from the public spaces reserved for the citizens with rights and pushed into non-public spaces, which are run by state and military surveillance, multinational operations servicing a European market and non-governmental organisations.

IA is an exercise that explores the format of the interview – as testimony or as a document – and the values associated with it: transparency/manipulation, neutrality/ideology and subjectivity/objectivity. When the procedure is laid bare, the substance is transformed. It could also be described as a series of visions from a city undergoing a reverse metamorphosis, an encapsulation, we could say: Barcelona 1992. A series of interviews edited with the camera in 1992 and 1994, and subsequently compiled onto two DVDs. Through the manipulation of the ritual, the interview becomes a space in which processes of the construction of meaning are challenged. Meta-interviews, self-interviews, interviews with the medium, views.

“The opening of a Muslim oratory in a building in Santa Coloma de Gramenet (Barcelona), for the celebration of Ramadan in October 2004 sparked a confrontation with dye intolerance among the residents of the city and the City. No Mosque! is a documentary of dialog and reflection that analyzes causes and consequences of this conflict on the basis of testimony of all of its protagonists.” We see the escalating pressure from one section of the neighborhood, the solidarity of others (the Ateneu Popular), the pathetic response of the City Council and the Muslim community's banishment to a prayer room made from shipping containers among wire fences in an Industrial Zone... A fractal that is being repeated exponentially throughout the country.

This film explores the lives of a refugee community, the Saharawis, whose land was stolen and they were condemned to live in a forgotten corner of the Sahara desert. The human face of this long struggle for independence is shown through a child called Hussein and his family.
